He: How was your day?
She: cloudy mostly.
He: So, did it rain at last or stayed cloudy without rain like in Chennai?
She: (with an exhausted smile at the corner of the lips she says) No, there was heavy rain. I got completely drenched by it, still couldn’t wipe myself fully.
He: What happened?
She: I remembered my mother.
He: Oh!
She: How my father would beat her! She would be pathetic. I was still small then.
He: I’m sorry (he says in a hard-to-be heard tone).
She: (anxiously says) I’m sorry I’m sorry. You don’t get bored by me. We can talk something else.
He: Yes, we can talk..we can talk something else but first about your rain and rain alone till you feel that you are wiped fully for now.
She: (starts to cry. Her voice breaks and words try to rush out from her mouth as she cries. He asks her not to cry but soon realizes that that isn’t the way. He allows her to cry. She cries like a pathetic baby who doesn’t understand anything that is happening around her in her mother’s funeral. He feels helpless over the phone. Finally, as her tears come down to a halt, she was heard.) I’m sorry, I’m really very sorry.
He: Cry..no problem..don’t feel sorry..sometimes it’s the only way out.
She: My mother was only 30 years old and I was only 7 years old then. She fainted and fell down and I didn’t know what to do. No one was there in the house except me. I splashed water over her face. I have seen that in movies. She didn’t react. Then I ran and called my father. He didn’t pick the call because it was from my mother’s cell phone. I opened the door, ran towards our neighbour’s house, and rang their door bell. Finally, Jessica aunty helped me take my mother to the hospital. My mother was still unconscious. The doctor said that she has some problem in her heart. My mother used to tell me that that is where I’m. I cried in the hospital. The doctor consoled me with a chocolate. We came home. Jessica aunty told my mother that I cried. My mother kissed me. I asked her “Are you going to die?” She said “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Those words are ringing in my mind still. She left me after a few months..she left me. Did my mother lie? (and she couldn’t resist crying)
He: No, she didn’t lie..she didn’t lie dear. She was just like any other mother who would leave her child at seven. I love you, I love you.
She: (with tears rolling down slowly and now more unconsciously kissing the side of her nose she says) I feel like holding your hands now.
He: hey..
She: Would you?
He: How would I now? How could I come there?
She: You can! You have come like that before.
He: When?
She: You don’t know that. I know. Thank you, thank you for hearing my story again.
He: Don’t say that. Whenever you are drenched I will listen, I will hear. That is why I’m.
She: I love you.
He: hmm!! Are you ok now?
She: But my father was also a good man..he is even now. He fights with my mother often but whenever she cries, he was also like you. When he came to know that my mother has had an NSTEMI..I mean a heart attack, he said “sorry” and he never fought with her again. He loved her and he loves her still. They both forgave each other fully. I know.
He: (lost in her words he says) I wish I were with you from that time.
She: (smiles and says) thank you. But I need you all the more now. It is now. I wish I would not faint at 30. Do not allow me to faint.. please.
He: Yes!!
She: hmm..OK. Before it is too cloudy for you let’s sleep.
He: Yeah let’s sleep but smile please.
She: *eeeee* how am I?
He: Beautiful.
She: Will you not smile for me?
He: That will not be beautiful. Better we sleep if you feel relaxed now.
She: Yes, thank you. You wiped me thoroughly.
He: hmm.. :) good night.
She: Good night. Love you.
He: Love you. Bye!
She: Bye!
P.S.: I don’t know whether they spoke further or they hung up the call.
